DUMOULIN WINS GIRO IN THRILLING FINAL STAGE TIME TRIAL!

Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin pulled off a thrilling win at the 100th Giro d’Italia Sunday, coming from behind on the final day to earn the biggest win of his career in Milan. The 26-year-old Dutchman was dominant in the Giro’s two decisive time trials, determined on the grueling mountain stages, and courageous in his ability to fight through adversity over the course of the three-week grand tour.

In the end, the race came down to a dramatic Stage 21 time trial in Milan, which Dumoulin won on his Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike. The victory also marked the first-ever grand tour win for both Dumoulin and Team Sunweb.

“It’s incredible,” Dumoulin said after finishing second in the final TT in Milan, jumping from fourth to first in the final general classification. “It was such a nerve-wracking day. Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin continued his incredible 2017 season, piloting his Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike to the elite men’s individual time trial world championship Wednesday in Norway. Dumoulin’s gold medal for The Netherlands follows his victory with Team Sunweb in the team time trial earlier this week at the 2017 UCI Road World Championships.

Facing rainy conditions, slippery roads and cobblestone sections on the 31km course in Bergen, plus a final 3.4km climb up Mount Fløyen, Dumoulin dominated the competition, beating second-place finisher Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) by nearly a minute, and bronze medalist Chris Froome (Great Britain) by 1:21.

“I can’t believe it, it’s really amazing,” Dumoulin said after crossing the line with the fastest time of 44:41. “I had such a good day I thought my power meter was off because it was so high.”

Some riders, including silver medalist Roglic, chose to switch bikes at the base of the final climb up Mount Fløyen, but Dumoulin stuck with his Trinity Advanced Pro TT bike. He also wore the Giant Rivet TT helmet to maximize his aero advantage.

“Yesterday I made the decision,” Dumoulin said. “I chose not to risk swapping bikes. I think I’m one of the guys who can do a really good climb on the TT bike and I have no problems handling it, so I think it was the right decision.”

The Dutchman, who earlier this year won the Giro d’Italia, was able to produce the winning time even with the disadvantage of riding in the rain. “After it started raining I had to take the corners really slow,” he said. “Especially in the final kilometer of the climb, with all the twists and turns. Every corner my back wheel was slipping because I had my TT tires on, as I thought it would stay dry.” - Giant's 'World Champ!' Story
